Why This Update Matters
Starting August 1, 2025, NPCI is enforcing fresh API usage limits on UPI apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others) to reduce system overload and avoid outages during high-traffic periods . The rules affect non-financial actions like balance enquiries, account lookups, transaction-status checks, and AutoPay schedules .
These changes follow a serious UPI outage on April 12, 2025, when repeated transaction-status queries overloaded the system and dropped the success rate below 50 % for hours .
What’s Changing: New Limits & Rules
- Balance checks
- Max 50 checks per day per UPI app
- For users with multiple apps, each app has its own quota
- Linked account lookups
- Limited to 25 per day per app
- Transaction status checks
- Allowed only 3 retries per failure, with at least 90 seconds gap between each retry
- AutoPay mandates (EMI, subscriptions, SIPs, OTT, etc.)
- Will run only during non‑peak hours:
- Before 10 AM
- 1 PM to 5 PM
- After 9:30 PM
- No change to per‑transaction UPI payment caps
- Still up to ₹1 lakh (₹5 lakh for select categories like healthcare or education)
- Implementation deadline
- All affected banks and UPI apps must implement these limits by July 31, 2025
What You Should Do
- Avoid excessive balance checks or status refreshes in a day.
- Schedule your subscriptions or recurring payments outside peak hours to avoid delays.
- Use your bank’s native app for certain background checks if needed.
- Understand that these changes won’t affect basic payments to merchants or the transaction amount limits you’re used to.
Bottom Line:
These updates aren’t about reducing your freedom—they’re about keeping UPI fast, stable, and reliable as usage scales. For most users, daily transactions will remain unaffected. But if you habitually refresh your UPI app or rely heavily on AutoPay, it’s time to adjust your routine.
