Indian travelers can now enjoy seamless payments abroad with UPI-enabled apps like BHIM, Google Pay, Paytm, and PhonePe. Here’s how to make the most of UPI for international transactions.
How UPI Works Internationally
- Pay directly to foreign merchants from your Indian bank account.
- Look for the BHIM UPI logo at stores or ask the cashier.
Steps to Activate UPI for International Use
- Open your UPI app (BHIM, GPay, PhonePe, etc.).
- Go to the Profile/Settings section.
- Select your bank account and choose UPI International/Global.
- Set the validity period and enter your UPI PIN to activate.
Note: You must activate this feature separately on each app linked to the same account.

Validity & Deactivation
- UPI International activation is valid for up to 90 days.

Transaction Limits & Fees
- Limits: ₹1 lakh/day (₹2 lakh for Europe).
- Charges: No fees by UPI, but banks may charge forex markup fees.
Failed Transactions
- If the payment is debited but not received, raise a dispute within the app.
- Track transactions through your app’s history section.
