Is UPI with Credit Cards at Risk?

Hey TapNow fam

There’s something important we think all of you should be aware of.

We’re seeing an emerging concern regarding credit card payments via UPI. Several users have recently reported that local vendors are starting to reject UPI payments when they’re made through a credit line. Why? Because of the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) that gets applied.

Now, here’s the issue — many small merchants and vendors operate on razor-thin margins. They’ve started noticing deductions from their payments when customers pay using UPI tied to a credit card, especially via platforms like Bharat QR. Some payment apps might waive MDR below ₹2,000, but others aren’t so forgiving.

What this means for us as credit card users:

  • You may lose out on the convenience of using your credit card via UPI with some vendors.
  • Merchants might start rejecting credit-linked UPI payments, pushing users back to debit cards or cash.
  • The vision of credit card + UPI convenience could suffer if this trend grows.

As a TapNow community, we always advocate smart and seamless usage of your credit tools. This is just a heads-up to keep an eye out when using UPI — especially at local shops — and to be courteous to merchants who might raise concerns. Keep multiple payment methods handy, and we’ll continue tracking this trend closely.
